Message from the Board

Dear Members and Friends.

Once again, we had a successful and very interesting meeting thanks to you, our guests and our speaker Christian Findt who introduced his company and showed us the latest technology regarding surveillance cameras. We’re very pleased to see that our new motto “come and meet friends over business” seems to bear fruits slowly but surely; but, of course, we’re always open to other suggestions and ideas.

Message from the Board

Dear Members and Friends.

Our February meeting was the first one following our new motto “come and meet friends over business”. We are happy to report that it was a great success for multiple reasons: first, because we only received positive comments, and second, because we had more guests than members attending! Of course, the basic fact is nothing to be proud of but given the situation that it was Valentine’s Day we rate this as a good turnout. We’re sure next time we will have more members, although most guests have announced to come again. A little pressure here Ladies and Gentlemen! wink

Thanks, again, to Ulli who presented her business and security solutions. Next meeting, Uwe Welz will inform us on the latest changes on the wills and estate laws.

Beethoven's German opera Fidelio

Dear Members and Friends,

Edmonton Opera will stage Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera Fidelio in German in April of 2012. They have graciously offered our organization a 30% discount on certain seats for the Tuesday performance on April 24 at 7:30pm and invited us to attend two lectures on Wednesday, April 11 from 7-9 pm at the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Ledcor Theatre. The first half will be a panel discussion surrounding ‘Wrongful Imprisonment’ with panelists discussing the relevance of Fidelio’s story today. Following this discussion they will have a brief intermission and then Opera 101. Opera 101 is a lecture done by their Artistic Administrator Jeff McCune who will discuss in further detail the background and production of Fidelio. Both lectures are complementary, but Edmonton Opera encourage guests to RSVP to Amanda.MacRae@edmontonopera.com.

If you are interested in the discount for the Tuesday April 24th performance of Fidelio please contact our secretary Mike at secretary@gcbpaa.ca.

Message from the Board

Dear Members and Friends,

First, we would like to say thank you to the ones joining us at this month’s meeting. We had a great discussion about the future course of our association.

Before outlining our future strategy, we would like to bring those who could not join up to date about the most important facts which pushed us into this direction:

  • Our membership base has dropped to 26 members in total incl. honorary members (5) and students (3). Currently, only 18 members have renewed their membership.
  • We had multiple great events (John Stanton, Nanotech at UofA & NINT, 40th anniversary) with low attendance rates despite the quality of the event.
  • Out of app. 40 guests welcomed at the 40th anniversary, no new memberships could be created.

Dear Members and Friends,

I trust that all of you who were able to attend the Christmas Party at the Cultural Centre on Dec. 2 had a great time.

Our next regular meeting will take place on January 10, 2012 at the Cultural Centre.  We will not have a speaker on that evening but a session to discuss the future of our association.  Once again, we are facing the issue with the very low attendance record of our members and also the lack of people renewing their memberships. Maybe our association has outgrown its original purpose and intent.  This is what we would like to discuss with our members and come up with a resolution and or solution because we just cannot continue and the board has tried numerous things and events, etc but there seems to be no interest.

Message from the President

Dear Members and Friends,

On Nov. 08 we had our regular monthly meeting at the National Institute of Nanotechnology.  Besides a laboratory tour, there were also several speakers who spoke about the importance of nanotechnology for Alberta as well as about novel products, which were developed at the University of Alberta, the National Institute for Nanotechnology, and the Alberta Centre for Advanced MNT Products.  I herewith like to thank our board member, Mr. Michael Thomas, for organizing this memorable event at the university as well as speakers and tour guides who made their time available to our associations. You will find more information about the topics and the presenters on our website.
